Calcium is a mineral essential to all stages of life, age groups, and gender.

99% of the body’s calcium is stored in the bones and teeth. The remainder circulates in the blood for use by the muscles and nervous system. It is important to note that the body does not make its own calcium; it is obtained and absorbed from the foods in your diet. This will include supplements if you are taking them.

Calcium concentration must be kept constant, and if not enough is taken in to the body, calcium will be withdrawn from the store sites in your bones. The bones will gradually become less dense, losing some of their strength, which can then lead to osteoporosis (brittle, porous bones). Withdrawing calcium from the bones is the body’s way of keeping blood levels constant.

Men and women will naturally lose calcium from their bones as they age, but the rate of loss is much higher in women. Women who are experiencing menopause, will have a faster loss of calcium from their bones. A good store of calcium in the bones at the menopause stage of life, will assist a woman in keeping osteoporosis at bay.
A calcium rich diet for the first 30 to 40 years of your life is essential for building-up your calcium stores. This will put you in a good position for fighting off bone disease in later life.

Calcium is essential to the body for many functions including; maintaining healthy bones and teeth; muscle contraction, including heart beat regulation; maintaining a healthy nervous system; regulating blood pressure (aiding blood clotting); the fight against osteoporosis. Studies have shown that diets rich in calcium can help the body to manage fat cells by aiding the mechanisms that store fat in the body. The result can help with weight loss. Including foods rich in calcium can help create a feeling of fullness, which can help to prevent snacking in-between meals.

Factors that influence calcium absorption

Vitamin D: Obtained from the sun on our skin, and is prevalent in food items such as canned salmon, eggs, butter and margarine. Calcium can not function in the body without Vitamin D. This vitamin helps to regulate the absorption of calcium from the food we ingest.

Exercise: Weight bearing exercise is needed for optimal absorption of calcium into the bones. This can include, walking, aerobics, running, dancing, cycling, gardening, weights or even pushing a pram.

Protein: A high protein intake reduces absorption. Recent studies indicate that while dairy products are a good source of calcium, their high protein content can interfere with the body’s ability to use the calcium ingested. It is best to obtain calcium from a varied diet, which includes non-dairy sources such as soybeans, almonds and salmon.

Hormones: Menopause sees a decline in oestrogen levels, resulting in a decline in the body’s ability to absorb calcium from your diet. The adolescence (teens) stage of life sees less calcium being absorbed due to the changes in hormone levels for both males and females.

Weight: Extreme thinness, (low body fat levels) or following very restricted diets will affect calcium absorption, and see withdrawal from the bones as the body struggles to maintain a constant level of calcium in the blood. This can lead to osteoporosis in later life, as the skeleton has not been given a chance to become strong.

And: High levels of Caffeine, Salt, Alcohol or Smoking will all reduce the amount of calcium the body can absorb from the diet.

Signs of Deficiency

A mild calcium deficiency can lead to insomnia, brittle nails, muscle twitching, irritability, and palpitations. Severe deficiency affects the muscular system – cramps, pains, numbness, stiffness, and depression. A deficiency of this degree can cause rickets in children. The most at risk are the elderly, those who avoid dairy products or other sources of calcium rich foods, those on high protein/high fibre diets, or when consuming large amounts of alcohol.

Human colon is responsible for three main functions and one of these functions is to absorb nutrients obtained from food. If due to some reason the working of this organ is disturbed, we don’t receive adequate amounts of nutrients in our blood and as a result many systems of the body suffer.

Colon cancer is a type of degenerative disease that occurs as a result of calcium deficiency. Early stages of this cancer may be cured by using calcium supplements. Doctors also advise using a liquid calcium supplement for colon health. These supplements are now easily available on the market and are very beneficial for maintaining long-term colon health.

Liquid calcium supplement for colon health may protect the body not only against colon cancer but many other degenerative diseases as well. These diseases include osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Liquid supplements contain calcium carbonate or calcium citrate along with vitamin D and some other minerals. These supplements are especially useful for elderly people and children.

Calcium deficiency is very common among women above the age of 40. After menopause, they are advised by their doctors to eat a nutrition-rich diet. However, this is not practical at this age since many foods are not easily digested. These women and other calcium-deficient people are at high risk of developing colon cancer, and therefore they are strongly advised to add a liquid calcium supplement for colon health to their everyday diet.

Many other serious complications also occur as a result of calcium deficiency. Pregnant women need 1200 mg of calcium daily to ensure proper growth of the baby and to prevent birth defects and abnormalities. Similarly, lactating women require adequate amounts of calcium on a daily basis to help the baby grow at normal pace.

People who eat calcium-rich foods and also consume calcium supplements are at a reduced risk of developing degenerative diseases including colon cancer. Coral calcium has recently been found to be helpful in overcoming calcium deficiency quickly as it has a higher absorption rate than normal calcium carbonate. Coral calcium is obtained from fossilized coral reefs and is a pure, natural form of calcium carbonate.

Try to find liquid calcium supplements made with coral calcium. It is not only easily digested but also provides many long-term health benefits including assistance in weight loss and prevention of depression and PMS.

By: John Gibb

During pregnancy the requirement of calcium increases. Around 200 mg/day of calcium is taken up by the baby to develop properly. When the baby is born, about 20-30 g of calcium is found naturally in its skeleton. Later on during breastfeeding, about 1200 mg of calcium should be consumed by the mother to ensure proper growth of her baby.

Sufficient calcium intake and pregnancy are therefore related to each other. Many kinds of birth defects, abnormalities and miscarriages occur as a result of calcium deficiency in the mother. Women are advised by their doctors to obtain optimal levels of calcium from their everyday diet and to be on the safe side they should add at least one calcium supplement product to their everyday diet.

The importance of calcium intake and pregnancy can also be established by the fact that the rate of calcium loss through urine is the highest during pregnancy. To ensure proper absorption of calcium by the blood stream, vitamin D or multi-vitamin tablets should also be consumed. In addition to these, a calcium-rich diet, regular exercise and good-quality calcium supplements help to ensure healthy pregnancies.

Because of urinary calcium excretion, pregnant women are at high risk of developing kidney stones. Extra care should be taken in the context of diet and other factors during pregnancy. Avoid too much protein-rich foods coming from animal sources, and try to drink milk regularly.

In addition to this, also try to avoid soft drinks, too much sugar and salt, coffee, tea, tobacco and alcohol. All these things are not only dangerous for the baby but also increase the rate of calcium loss.

Hypertension and depression are two of the most common symptoms seen in pregnant women. These again are caused due to severe calcium and other minerals’ deficiency. Heavy medication and inactivity also contribute to calcium loss and interfere in other processes. Similarly, high levels of phosphorus in the blood and high level of parathyroid hormone are dangerous for health.

To ensure a healthy pregnancy and long-term health after delivery, try to find the highest quality calcium supplements available out there. The best ones are those which have been made by mixing a calcium salt with sources of some other minerals and vitamins. These nutrients include magnesium, potassium, vitamin D, vitamin K2 and sodium.

The importance of sufficient calcium intake and pregnancy cannot be overemphasized. Try to eat a balanced diet and don’t sit idle for long durations of time.

By: John Gibb

Calcium citrate supplements have benefits of their own and in some cases they are better than calcium carbonate supplements. However, a great majority of calcium tablets available on the market are products made of calcium carbonate, especially coral calcium which comes under this category and is gaining widespread popularity nowadays.

Choosing the right calcium supplement depends on your age and recommended dietary allowance. Calcium citrate is an acidic form of calcium, and therefore it has a better absorption rate. However, calcium citrate supplements normally provide much less amounts of calcium when measured in milligrams than other kinds of calcium compounds. Since calcium is used to reduce acidity in the stomach, people who are already suffering from an acidic stomach should avoid calcium citrate at all costs.

Calcium carbonate, on the other hand, is ideal to be taken after meals since it reduces acidity and helps in proper digestion of food. When measured in milligrams, capsules or tablets containing calcium carbonate provide more elementary calcium than calcium citrate supplements. If you think your everyday diet is not sufficient to fulfill calcium RDA then you should buy calcium carbonate supplements easily available for purchase.

High levels of calcium in the blood are just as much dangerous as low levels. Therefore, don’t consume more than 2000 mg of calcium daily, either through food or through supplements. A good alternative to calcium citrate supplements is provided by tablets made from coral calcium. This kind of calcium is better absorbed than normal calcium carbonate and can be taken with other vitamin and mineral supplements.

The amount of calcium absorbed by the blood depends on many other factors including age, level of vitamin D in the blood and pregnancy. Caffeine, alcohol and a protein-rich diet can reduce calcium absorption. Similarly, sodium is responsible for calcium loss through urine.

If you intake calcium citrate supplements, you have to take more tablets to receive the same amount of calcium as you would receive from a coral calcium tablet. Fortified-orange juice and cereals make use of calcium citrate to increase their nutritional value. Calcium absorption is also affected by the time at which you consume the tablets. Normally, it is recommended to take calcium pills right after meals. And it is also useful to go for a walk after a meal or exercise on a regular basis if you want to reduce calcium loss.

By: John Gibb

It is a known fact that in normal conditions only 10% of the calcium we consume is actually absorbed by the blood. The remaining goes out through urine. Even when we eat lots of calcium-rich foods and dietary supplements, most of us remain calcium deficient because of this loss. There are many factors that contribute to optimal calcium absorption. Let’s have a look at these factors.

Activity of Parathyroid Glands: Naturally 98% of calcium found in our body is present in the bones. Parathyroid glands are responsible for producing parathyroid hormone (PTH) which helps calcium to travel from bones into the bloodstream where it is needed for many important functions. The thyroid gland produces a secretion known as calcitonin which increases bone mineralization.

If due to some health condition this whole process is interrupted, calcium absorption is affected. Our diet plays a major role in deciding how much calcium gets absorbed in the bones and how much is left to be used by the blood. Furthermore, if parathyroid hormone level becomes abnormally high it causes more and more calcium to be transported from the bones to the bloodstream and ultimately bones starts becoming weak.

Due to these reasons it is very important that you eat a proper diet and take high-quality supplements to ensure maximum calcium absorption.

Role of Vitamin D: Vitamin D, as we all know, is a major factor contributing to calcium absorption by the blood. The important thing to know is, if we don’t go out in the sun very often and don’t consume multi-vitamin pills, we might be at high risk of calcium loss. High levels of both vitamin D and calcium are dangerous for health, and therefore blood tests should be performed after every 6 months to measure the level of these two nutrients and other minerals and vitamins important for our health.

Foods that Upset Calcium Absorption: To cut the story short, simply avoid these foods: a protein-rich diet coming from animal sources if you think your mineral consumption is very low, carbonated soft drinks, too much coffee or tea, tobacco, and too much sugar.

Phosphoric acid found in soft drinks disturbs calcium absorption. Similarly, coffee and tea tend to reduce an important enzyme in blood which is required for calcium transportation from bones to the bloodstream.

In addition to the above-mentioned tips, eat fresh fruits and vegetables on a regular basis, drink lots of pure milk, consume high-quality calcium supplements and exercise on a daily basis to overcome calcium deficiency and live a happy, fruitful life.

By: John Gibb

Green leafy vegetables are not only excellent sources of calcium but they also provide adequate amounts of magnesium. Spinach is one of the vegetables that can be considered a good source of calcium and magnesium. Almonds, beans and other nuts are also rich sources of these two nutrients and come under the vegetarian diet.

Milk and dairy products are good non-vegetarian sources of calcium but they do not provide adequate amounts of magnesium. Children under the age of 10 require up to 120 mg of magnesium and 800 mg of calcium. ¼ cup of almonds, soybean, peanuts and cashews provide 30 – 100 mg of magnesium.

To balance your daily intake of minerals eat non-fat foods. Avoid saturated fat, a protein-rich diet coming from animal sources, alcoholic and soft drinks, too much sugar and tobacco. Any good source of calcium and magnesium is effective only if both these minerals are readily absorbed by the bloodstream. Furthermore, to prevent calcium loss through urine you need to increase your daily intake of vitamin D and phosphorus.

Many nutritional supplements available out there contain calcium and magnesium together along with many other vitamins and minerals. These supplements or tablets can also be considered a good source of calcium and magnesium. Try to find good-quality calcium tablets that contain high concentration of calcium along with adequate amounts of magnesium, sodium, potassium, vitamin D and vitamin K2.

Calcium tablets that fulfill both calcium and magnesium needs on a daily basis are the best ones to buy. It has been discovered that coral calcium obtained from fossilized coral reefs above sea level contains magnesium, potassium and sodium along with high concentration of calcium carbonate in just the right quantities. This particular compound helps to fights against many degenerative diseases and also acts as a good source of calcium and magnesium.

To buy high-quality calcium and magnesium supplements, look around for Okinawan coral calcium supplements. This special coral calcium comes from Okinawa island of Japan and is popular for its purity and effectiveness. It is easy to absorb and digest and can be used by people of all ages without any reservation.

Normally doctors recommend consuming 2-3 calcium tablets daily after each meal. Calcium carbonate and coral calcium supplements are best absorbed in the presence of stomach acid. Consequently they reduce acidity, helps in proper digestion of food and also assist in weight loss.

By: John Gibb
